The National museum of the Republic of Buryatia was founded in 2011 as a result of the integration of three museums: The Hangalov Historical museum, The Sampilov Art museum, and the Buryatia Nature Museum. In 2013 the Novoselenginsky museum of the Decembrists was integrated into the National museum. At the moment the design process for constructing a new building for the newly formed museum is in process.
The museum specializes in keeping, studying and popularizing history, culture and art of Buryatia and the Baikal region. The whole history of the region (the unique fund collections consisting of more than one hundred thousand objects, the unique nature, the artists’ and the craftsmen’s works) is displayed at the museum collections and features a great palette telling about the history and culture of the people from the Baikal region.
