The National Art Museum of the Sakha Republic is located in the very center of Yakutsk, on Kirova Street, 9. The museum houses works by foreign and Russian artists of the 16th–20th centuries, and presents diverse Sakha art of the 18th — early 21st century. The museum’s collection began when 27 paintings from the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery were donated to the republic in 1928. The collection is quite valuable, as it includes works by such prominent artists as Vasily Tropinin, Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Vasily Polenov, and Isaac Levitan. The section of Russian art also comprises a unique collection of examples of folk crafts, for instance, the Kholmogory bone carving, Dymkovo and Filimonovo toys, lacquer miniature, silk painting, etc. The most important part of the museum collection is the art of Yakutia — this collection includes paintings, graphic works, sculptures and works of decorative and applied arts.
