One of the first regional museums in the country, the Arkhangelsk Regional Museum today successfully combines Russian museum traditions with modern technologies; its collections which began to form in 1837, can compete with those of the leading federal museums.
The main part of the museum’s exhibition is located in the historical centre of the city, the unique complex “Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvory” (“Arkhangelsk merchant courts”). This is one of the few monuments of civil architecture of the 17th century that have survived to this day. The grandiose building served as a place of dwelling for merchants who arrived at the first seaport of Russia, a fortress, and later — wine and salt warehouses, customs, and a printing house. In 1981, the historic building was given a second life as a museum, and now it is rightfully considered the hallmark of Arkhangelsk.
